The Importance Of Alternative Energy Wind Production In Our Sustainable Future
Alternative energy wind power has the potential to play a very significant role in the future of the planet's energy production. While so much of the media attention has focused on solar power, those with the awesome responsibility of planning the future of energy production have come to realize that a more holistic approach is needed. Although it is true that solar power alone can provide all of the energy we need for our future, the best possible result can be obtained from combining the best of the technologies we have available.
It is an important characteristic of our planet that areas which are weak in one resource tend to be strong in others. There are many areas of the world, especially in the more northerly temperate zones, where solar power will be less than ideal. There is simply not enough sunlight, and there is not enough land mass compared to areas covered in water. In these areas, there tends to be consistent strong winds, especially offshore. This makes a combination of wind and solar power the obvious way forward for satisfying our energy needs.
Both solar and wind energy systems are dependent upon a consistent supply of the natural resource they need, and there are always going to be times when these resources are diminished. Seas can be calm, and sunlight obscured by heavy cloud. What is needed is a way for energy to be stored so that the supply can continue constantly throughout any prevailing weather condition. We have the ideal storage solution in hydrogen, which can effectively store up power generated from either solar or wind power.
Alternative energy wind power clearly has a very significant role to play in developing the sustainable energy future we so badly need. Wind power has attracted some negative press due to the impact on the environment which it can have. In many parts of the world, you can travel to what was once a beauty spot and find it covered with rows of wind turbines slowly turning. It is important to realize that this need not be a permanent feature of our landscape.
As alternative energy wind power technologies are developing, so the financial incentives change. At the moment, it is far cheaper to produce wind energy onshore than offshore. This will not always be the case, as there is such a huge potential for offshore wind. Currents are stronger and the capacity is virtually unlimited. We can achieve the greatest progress by developing wind power onshore, and then taking it offshore as the technology matures. As wind turbines need replacing after approximately twenty five years, it is quite probable that the unsightly onshore turbines will never be replaced. Offshore installations will prove to be the future of alternative energy wind.
